I’m a day late with Booking Through Thursday, but still wanted to answer the question:

It’s Thanksgiving here in the U.S. of A. so …
What authors and books are you most thankful for?

First off I wanted to say I am thankful for all authors for writing worlds and books that you can lose yourself in.  Without their creativity and way with words I wouldn’t be able to escape the reality of this world.  I love books for that very reason.

The two authors that came to mind when this question was asked, though, were Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. and Douglas Adams.  I am thankful for their wit and ability to draw the reader to question the nature of humanity.  I love the fact that when I pick up their books I know I will end up with a smile on my face and a good laugh.  Douglas Adam’s Hitchiker’s Guide is one set of books I can read over and over again and quote brilliant sayings out of as they mock the simple truths of humanity.  Kurt Vonnegut Jr.  was also a master at making the reader think about the silly nature of humanity and I love the simple sayings out of his books.  Reading this short limmerick from Jailbird always makes me laugh and I am thankful for Kurt Vonnegut Jr. for putting this in one of his books:

Sally in the garden,
Siftin' through the cinders,
Lifted up her arse,
And farted like a man,
The busting of her britches broke fifteen windows,
The cheeks of her ass went (bam, bam, bam)

I just love the dirty and silly nature of this.  I can quote Vonnegut for days and the same goes for Adams.  This is why I am thankful for them especially.

BUT every author has their own special place in my heart and each does a great thing by writing brilliant books and worlds and characters for me to live vicariously through.  I am thankful to have books in my life.
